The Root Chakra

Clipped_image_20250924_232909.png

The story of Muladhara begins in ancient India, where the first yogis meditated beneath banyan trees and felt the earth’s pulse in their bones. They knew true survival meant more than food or shelter—it was about grounding in the soil’s steady power. In the fertile plains of the Ganges, sages named this foundation of life the Root Chakra, the first of the seven energy centres. Muladhara, meaning “root support,” is symbolized by the Elephant, emblem of strength, patience, and wisdom. Revered for its stability and memory, the elephant reminds us to stand firm and remember our origins. In Hindu tradition, the elephant-headed god Ganesha—remover of obstacles—guards every new beginning, just as Muladhara anchors the chakra path.

The Root Chakra is deeply tied to the Earth — the soil, the harvest, and the strength of ancestry. Across cultures, it symbolised survival, stability, and faith in life’s cycles. Farmers and tribes honoured the land through rituals, drumming, and fire festivals that connected them to their roots.
Muladhara represents the foundation of both body and culture — our link to family, history, and the instinct to endure.
When balanced, one feels like the elephant: grounded and secure. When blocked, fear and instability take hold, disconnecting us from the earth that sustains us.

Colour

The colour red was chosen for this chakra because it reflects the colour of blood, the clay-rich soil of India, and the glow of fire that kept early tribes alive through cold nights. Red symbolises life itself — vitality, security, and primal instinct. Without red energy, life fades into fear and weakness; with it, we stand tall, energised, and unshaken.

Frequency

Clipped_image_20250924_232909.png

The frequency of 396 Hz became associated with Muladhara as sages listened to the rhythms of the earth. This vibration mirrors the heartbeat of nature — the low hum of the ground beneath, the rumble of thunder rolling across plains, the steady rhythm of the elephant’s footsteps. In sound healing, this frequency is said to dissolve fear and guilt, reconnecting us to our primal trust.
